The oldest and largest Attic cemetery extended outside the walls on the northwest outskirts of ancient Athens. The site is dominated by stately tombs with sculptural masterpieces. The Demosion Sema [public cemetery], a site for the burial of prominent war casualties, was in the same area. A small onsite museum houses important finds from the cemetery. Kerameikos

Kerameikos, «the most beautiful suburb» of the city according to Thucydides, encompasses approximately 38.5 hectares that extend to the northwest of the major archaeological site of the Ancient Agora. Mount Lykabettos overlooked the site on the east; the Ancient Agora rose towards the Acropolis to the southeast, and the low hills of the Nymphs, the Pnyx and the Muses rose to the south. It was only towards north and west that the horizon opened up, with Mt Aigaleo in the distance; the small river Eridanos which flowed alongside the archaeological site found its outlet in this direction. The archaeological site is marked off by Piraeus, Ag. Asomaton and Ermou Streets, the entrance being at Ermou n. 148. In spite of everyday commotion, Kerameikos remains an idyllic setting of culture and relaxation, distant from the disconcerting ways of modern Athens.

The archaeological site of Kerameikos is accessible for the most part to visitors with reduced mobility and wheelchair users [assistance by a companion is recommended], via the main entrance at 148 Ermou str.
The archaeological museum of Kerameikos is fully accessible to visitors with reduced mobility and wheelchair users. A WC for the physically challenged is also provided.
At the site information desk, at the entrance, tactile site plans and brochures in Braille in Greek and English are available for visually impaired visitors.
