The Museum of Byzantine Culture, is housed in a historic building and work of art, built on the basis of the award-winning study of the architect, painter and poet Kyriakos Krokos between the years 1989-1993. In 3,430 sq.m. and eleven rooms aspects of Byzantine and post-Byzantine culture are presented through genuine exhibits -excavated mainly in Thessaloniki and Macedonia in general-, wall graphics and multimedia. The Museum has fully-equipped conservation laboratories and exemplary archeological storerooms, educational program room, outdoor educational activities space, temporary exhibition wing, multipurpose room, two amphitheaters, gift shop, and cafe-restaurant. In 2005 it was awarded as the "Museum of Europe" by the Council of Europe, an honor which was bestowed to a Greek public museum for the first time until today.
The Museum with its activities as a whole, the scientific and publishing work, is an exemplary center of preservation, research and promotion of cultural heritage. The collaborations, the opening to the civil society, to the youth, to the disabled, to the marginalized social groups, made the Museum an active center of culture and education in the service of the citizen. The Museum of Byzantine Culture is located on one of the main roads at the east side of the cityΆs center and is very easily accessible. It is surrounded by the City Hall, the Archaeological Museum, the Headquarters of the III Hellenic Army Corps, and the Pedio tou Areos Park. It was built on the site of the vast eastern necropolis of Roman and Byzantine times, next to one of the earliest cemeteries of the first Christians in Thessaloniki and some of the finds are displayed in the permanent exhibition. This area from the beginning of the 19th century was named Pedio tou Areos, i.e Mars Field, and was used by the Army as barracks and training area, and hosted temporarily the Thessaloniki International Fair.

At the "HELLENIC HERITAGE" Museum Shop you will find a variety of publications related to the place you visited, faithful copies of exhibits from the museums of Greece, a range of souvenirs such as fridge magnets, mirrors, notepads, etc., as well as items for the home, gifts, jewelry, scarfs, toys, etc. inspired by the Greek cultural heritage.
