The sanctuary of Asklepios at Epidavros was the largest sanatorium in Antiquity. The site's entrance marks a monumental propylon, from which a processual road led - among other buildings of minor significance - to the sanctuary's centre. There is the god's temple, the Tholos, i.e. one of the most elegant circular buildings of Classical architecture housing Asklepios' mystic cult, and the dormitory for incubation [Enkoimeterion], where the patients were healed after meeting the god in their sleep. Close to these buildings, there is the banquet hall [Hestiatorion], and the large hostel. In the former meals were served to pilgrims following the ceremonial festivities, and the latter facilitated the patients and their companions. At the sanctuary's southern edge, the ancient theatre - already famous in Antiquity for its unsurpassed beauty and harmony - was erected, which is the best ancient theatre preserved nowadays holding modern plays. Recent restoration works rendered the ancient sanctuary's form and function easily perceivable even to non-specialists.
In the Museum, stone slabs inscribed with miraculous healing narrations by Asklepios are exhibited, as well as medical implements, and sculptural votive offerings. A yet special feature of this Museum is the reconstructions of characteristic parts of the sanctuary's main buildings, which provide a direct and tangible image of the sacred space's architecture.
